Labels vary by seller
Terms such as open box, customer return, shelf pull, overstock and salvage are used differently across sellers. Do not assume a label means an item is new, complete, tested or covered by a warranty.
Ask specific questions
- Has the exact item been tested, and what was tested?
- Are parts, accessories, manuals or packaging missing?
- Is the photo of the actual item?
- Is damage cosmetic, structural or unknown?
- Can you inspect the item before committing?
An unopened box can still have a damaged product inside. A returned item can work perfectly or require repair. If the listing does not answer your questions, price that uncertainty into your decision.
Separate inspection, returns and warranties
Permission to inspect does not create a return policy. A return window does not necessarily include a manufacturer's warranty. Read each policy separately and ask the seller to explain any unclear terms before you purchase.
Think about the full cost
Consider replacement parts, repairs, cleaning, transport and disposal. Be especially careful with items where damage, missing components or unknown history could affect safe use.
Keep a record
Save the listing, condition notes, receipt and applicable terms. The directory provides research and links; the seller's current offer and terms govern your purchase.
